If I may have everyone's attention please, I would like to propose a toast to my son, John, who has finally graduated with his Ph.D in Physics from Anytown University. John, we are so proud of you and all that you have accomplished, and we look forward to hearing exciting things from you about your new job at Anytown Rockets.
For those of you who don't know, John has been interested in rockets ever since we watched Apollo 13. While many little boys wanted to be the astronauts up in the air, we knew that John was different when he said he wanted to be the person who built the rockets. Many sets of Legos and trips to science camp later, we were certain that this was where John's life is headed.
John has faced many setbacks on his road to being a rocket scientist. Three years ago, his mother died, leaving us alone and broken as a family. In part, the projects John and I have worked on together have kept her memory alive. John, I hope you know how proud your mother would be of you today.
I know you're all anxious to get dancing and congratulate John in his own way, so let me wrap this up. John, I love you more than anyone in this world, and I know you'll make us proud no matter where your journey takes you. To John!
